Considering that this event took place so long ago and the damage the eruption caused the city, it is still in relatively good condition today. The ash and the lava persevered the city, which gives us an insight to what everyday life back then was like. When noticing the gaps and spaces left from decomposing bodies, Giuseppe Fiorello filled them with plaster and it made accurate casts of the people from Pompeii. With this they could find out roughly how many people died from the eruption. Pompeii is still a major attraction that attracts as many as 2 million people a year out from all over the world. Mount Vesuvius has not erupted since 1944, but some experts say that another eruption is due any day.
